Every year, a select number of students are chosen to have their art showcased in a vertical art show. This year’s gallery was held in the lobby of the Administration Building from Jan. 31 to Feb 13. Schools along the feeder pattern had the chance to participate and work from elementary, middle and high school students was displayed.
“Submitting artwork is a great way to highlight students’ artistic journey,” AP art teacher Derek Jackson said. “It encourages a sense of continuity and growth in their artistic skills and gives them an opportunity to celebrate each other’s creativity.”
The art teachers at each school pick a piece from two students to display at the physical show. The teachers can then pick around 30 pieces from their students to display in a virtual slideshow, available after the physical show ends.
“Ms. Blair decided which piece to submit to the show but if I were to choose, I would pick the same one she did,” sophomore Alishba Farman said. “It is my favorite because of the variety of elements and principles I put into it.”
Farman was chosen to participate in the virtual show. Her passion for art began when she was a kid but has continued to grow from taking art classes at school.
Having the gallery displayed in the administration building allows a wide range of people to view student’s work without having to go out of their way.
“We had a board meeting on Monday night, and people coming through after the board meeting got to stop and see it,” Blair said. “It’s a great opportunity for people not just in your school to see your work.”
Jackson and Blair both emphasize the importance of the art show and its contribution to inspiring students and celebrating their progress.
“Having the vertical show shows the community, parents, and students what an awesome thing Frisco ISD has done with having art available to elementary through high school students,” Blair said. “You get to see students’ growth and the different things they’re involved in.”
