Changing Theatre Education for the Better
Senior Bailey Crawford Pursues Theatre After Graduation
“Theatre is about being the voice of the told and untold stories of the world. It is a form of art that challenges the viewer to go out and do something or reflect on the person they are when they sit down to see the show. Theatre is the ability to tell a narrative that moves people.” Those are the words of Bailey Crawford, the Frisco High School President of the International Thespian Society of the Theater Department and one of the State Thespian Officers representing Theater Students in Texas.
People find their passion in all different points in life, but Bailey found hers early on. “I started doing commercial acting and performing sets when I was nine years old and then in 7th grade I found theatre,” she said. “My first show was ‘Hairspray Jr.’ and after the opening night, I knew this was my new passion.”
Theater provides an artistic outlet for many students and creates a comfortable environment to learn how to perform and tell a story. The process of putting on a play takes months to prepare; from designing and constructing sets on the technical theater side to the onstage performance side.
Taking a Theatre class can also be important because it develops collaboration and communication skills, self confidence, and adds fun to the school day.
Bailey is a senior and will be attending the University of Evansville in Indiana after graduation. She plans to join the Theatre Performance program at the University. Bailey will be getting a Bachelors of Science with a focus on theatre advocacy and leadership. “My goal is to create a program that helps community and educational theatre and advocate for the importance of theatre in our schools.”
