On October 7, Frisco High School’s band competed at the Celina Marching Band Invitational. The Band was chosen as the Grand Champions during the finals award ceremony. They were also recognized with top awards for music, visuals, percussion and color guard.
“There were 31 bands, and it’s a preliminary format,” Director of Band, David Simon said. “They have one round with everybody, and then 12 bands advance to the finals.”
The Band performs in a wide variety of settings during the year. Some of them are varsity football games, indoor stage concerts, marching competitions and sight-reading evaluations.
“Each year, we choose two or three invitational competitions that we can enter,” said Simon. “Then, at the end of the season, we compete in the UIL competition, and during the spring, we focus on indoor stage concerts.”
The Frisco High School Band Program consists of over 130 students. It is one of the largest organizations on campus. The Band is divided into three groups during the school year, wind symphony, wind ensemble, and symphonic band. Students audition during the spring of the previous school year to be put into one of the groups.
“The kids are divided into three different groups during the school day,” said Simon. “Then, for the marching band season, we’re all in one big group plus color guard, and we practice outside of school.”
The band teachers are extremely proud of their students and look forward to having more wins in the future.
“We’re really proud of the students. They’ve worked really hard, and it’s really tough sometimes. There’s long hours, just like there is for any other activity,” said Simon. “We’re just super happy for our students to have that sense of being rewarded and have won that competition since they’ve been putting in a lot of work.”
