Flex or Advisory: Which is Better?

Would Once-a-Month Be More Practical for Advisory?

Flex Time is a 30-minute break after second period that occurs every day except Thursdays. On Thursday, Advisory takes place in a classroom where students receive information provided by the counselors. During Flex, students have the choice of attending tutorials, retake tests, or simply hang out with friends.

Many students do not support the idea of interrupting every week with Thursday’s Advisory class. Once a month would be more practical for Advisory because there is just not enough new information to present every week.

“I don’t think Advisory should be a thing,” said one student, “because we don’t get to do anything in that time period other than listen to the teacher tell us about lessons that I think most people would know by now.”

Flex Time provides a small break from school to mentally recharge and hang out with their friends or catch up on any school work.  A majority of students would prefer to limit Advisory to possibly once a month.

One particular student would prefer Flex Time every day. “I think flex is a good thing that school does,” he said, “and I know that many people love it. I think that some people get distracted from going to tutorials or anything academic-related to just go hang out with their friends during flex. But flex shouldn’t be taken away because it is the only break other than lunch that students get.”

As of Tuesday, November 15, Dr. Perry announced that Flex Time has been put on hold indefinitely due to students abusing the privilege.  Let’s hope that better days are ahead.
