The Frisco ISD Board of Trustees conducted their monthly school board meeting on Monday, Aug. 14. They addressed concerns and questions from community members and attended to relevant issues. The Board of Trustees pursues dedicated work to create and enforce district rules and regulations.
As an item on the agenda for the meeting, the board received public comments from individuals who have completed public comment forms to speak at the meeting. Frisco stakeholder Lokesh expressed concern about the lack of implemented police officers stationed at elementary schools. However, he ran out of his authorized time to speak before the board could respond. Lokesh also presented concerns about removing the bus route in his neighborhood, addressing his dissatisfaction with the explanation he was given.
“Mr. Lokesh, you signed up for an act on agreement with the city of Plano SRO contract, so we are unable to hear anything that is not placed on our agenda for today,” said board president Dynette Davis.” But I would invite you to communicate with Mr. Scott Warstler or our deputy superintendent Mr.Todd Fouche. They are working very closely with our transportation department to ensure your needs are met.”
Other important topics discussed at the meeting include conducting elections on FISD board representation at the 2023 Texas Association of School Boards delegate assembly and discussing the set tax rate. Stephanie Elad was nominated delegate with the motion passing 6-1, and Gopal Ponangi was nominated as an alternate delegate with the motion passing 6-1 as well.
“Most of this actually all of this, we went over in your recent workshop, but for the benefit of the public, I wanted to reiterate a few points about how the tax rate is set,” Kimberly Smith, board member, chief finance and strategy officer. “So we determine tax rates every August based on property values that we receive, certified property values that we receive from our county appraisal districts.”
The board decided to close the meeting with Consent Agenda 17. An act on the qualification of vendors. Smith went on to clarify the role of a vendor and the process of how they earn qualification to do business with the district. Smith also outlined how vendors submit proposals through the Request for Proposal process. A committee reviews a proposal and scores based on established criteria during the process. The process is meant to be an objective review.
“Our purchasing department annually reviews spending in various categories of what we call commodities or just different types of things that we’re spending money on,” said Smith.
Community members are encouraged to attend all board meetings and workshops in person or through the provided livestream on the Frisco ISD website. Frisco’s Board of Trustees will have their next school board meeting on Sept. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the FISD administration building at 5515 Ohio Drive, Frisco, Texas 75035.
