Downstairs C Hall is filled with students on the floor. Their sleeves are rolled up, gigantic sheets of paper line the floor, still wet with detailed paintings. There’s chatter and laughter filling up the space. The student council homecoming workday is well underway.
Frisco’s homecoming game is on Friday, Sept. 15, while the dance will be Saturday, Sept. 16, from 7 to 11 p.m. Whether it’s hyping the school up about coming out and supporting the football team for the upcoming game or by getting everything organized for the dance, work needs to be done. That work is done by the student council.
The group meets every B day during third period. The officers plan out the logistics to make these workdays happen.
“I would say it goes more into organizing homecoming itself and then the workdays fall into place,” said Ariana Karim, student council president. “We have to figure out all the decorations we want to make and all the supplies we need to order. Afterwards, we base our workday agenda on keeping our priorities in mind. For instance, today we’re doing banners because the quicker we get those out, the quicker people can plan out their outfits.”
But a workday agenda comes with its own challenges.
“Figuring out the dress up days is challenging because we want themes that people are going to be participating in and be excited about,” Karim said. “This is why we take a lot of suggestions from the student body, but then we need to balance that out by getting it approved by the admin and still giving people what they want. And finally, getting everyone on the same page about all of the decisions made and then setting up the supplies is all part of a hectic process.“
Not to mention the scheduling being a problem in and of itself.
“Because we’re such a small council we do have to call on our general members to ask them to actively participate in our events,“ said Lauren Shrago, public relations officer. “When scheduling, we not only have to keep the commitments of the other officers in mind, but we need to also consider a day in which most members can attend too.“
Even with all the tumultuous planning that goes into these workdays, it’s an event that helps promote school spirit, which is a top priority.
“School spirit is really important when it comes to homecoming and something we as a council are really focusing on this year,” said Emily Haecker, one of the sponsors for the club. “Decorating M Hall was something that was started last year and by continuing that this year, and by adding some surprise elements, we’re super excited how it’s going to elevate the school spirit and community we’re building.”
The next homecoming workday is Saturday, Sept. 9 from 12 to 4 p.m.
