During the holiday season, student-led clubs around the school are hosting philanthropy events ranging from card making to bake sales to support the community.
American Cancer Society hosted card making on Dec. 15 and 18. They also hosted a bake sale where all funds directly went towards cancer research.
“I’m really happy that we can help out some people and raise money for a good cause, especially since cancer affects a lot of people,” vice president Naya Monterio said. “I think everyone I know has been impacted by cancer in some way, maybe not directly, but they know someone who’s had it.”
Harmony for Humanity led by sophomore Asha Pradhan hosted a holiday greeting card making event to give to senior citizens. Pradhan also has a nonprofit, ‘Notes of Joy’, where she and others from her music school perform at retirement homes. Pradhan decided to take this idea of performing and make it available for musically involved students around the school.
“I wanted to bring more opportunities to Frisco because we have a big fine arts program where people can come sing and play a variety of instruments to increase the diversity of the club,” Pradhan said.
Along with performing, the club volunteered at the Frisco city wide event, the Walnuts Wassail Walk where they helped organize performances and craft stations.
“I wanted to volunteer at the walk because I thought it would be nice for everyone to have more volunteer opportunities,” Pradhan said. “I know people are always looking for more ways to meet new people and help the community.”
The student-led club, Future Civic Leader Association (FCLA), hosted a toy and necessities drive to give to the Children’s Medical Center in Plano. The officers collected all the donations on Dec. 18 and are bringing the donations to the hospital on Dec. 22.
“I’ve always wanted to do a toy donation drive for kids because I think it’s a great idea,” president and founder Eha Natu said. “I’ve also always wanted to partner with a children’s medical center because it’s for such a great cause. Since I made this organization, I knew that’s what I wanted to do.”
Along with the drive, the club hosted a workshop for members to decorate bookmarks which were donated to Hosp Elementary on Dec. 16.
“We went to the front office and met with the librarian and one of the coaches,” Natu said. “They were both very grateful and told me about how it was such a cute project. It was such a great way to give back to the school I used to go to.”
