The first annual Campus Beautification Day was hosted by NHS, Student Council and International Baccaluareate (IB), inviting students to volunteer to clean up the school, on Mar. 7.
“I think it’s important to provide students with a way of giving back to the school,” junior Sophia Liu said. “It’s nice to see so many other students show up to a service project. I got to meet some people I’d never seen before.”
Activities included vacuuming, wiping desks and white boards, picking up litter, tidying up common areas and watering plants.
“I enjoyed sweeping the halls at the end,” Liu said. “I also wiped down the tiles in the halls and tables in the library. I gained a lot of appreciation for the janitors at the school, and it made me realize the student body could also help out.”
Students gained volunteer hours for participating in the event.
“You can put this in your college applications saying ‘I cleaned up my school,’” junior Jaeden Spellman said. “College admission officers can see what you’re doing and how many volunteer hours [you have].”
Participants like Liu hope to see the event grow and involvement increase in the coming years.
“Having more students expands the possibilities of what the event can do, and it’d be incredibly cool to see larger scale beautification projects in the future,” Liu said.
