The schoolwide annual food drive benefitting Frisco Family Services is being hosted by Student Council from Dec. 1 to 5.
“Our main goal is to help replenish and restock Frisco Family Services, especially after Thanksgiving and the holiday rush,” Student Council secretary Elizabeth Shin said.
Every year, Frisco Family Services provides a list of items in high demand or that they are running out of.
“We’re looking specifically for canned foods and other nonperishable goods,” Shin said. “[Some specific items are] cooking oil, baking mixes, boxed meal helpers, mac and cheese and laundry detergent.”
Student Council encourages other organizations to get involved. Clubs like National Honor Society award community service hours to members who participate.
“Two years ago, we were able to collect over 1000 units of food because we had the participation of National Honor Society, BPA and different groups who gave community service hours,” Student Council co-sponsor teacher Emily Haecker said.
In past years, students with officer roles in Student Council helped run the event. This year, to encourage student leadership, students in the general council can get more involved.
“I’ve seen an increase in students who are wanting to help out,” Haecker said. “I’m really hoping that we can continue to increase the amount of leadership skills and the desire for leadership we have here.”
Students looking to participate can find donation boxes on the stage in the cafeteria and in front of the library.
“I think there’s a lot of great things that can come from the food drive,” Shin said. “We can help a lot of the community that is struggling with food insecurity. My favorite part is just being able to help. I really feel like food heals the soul.”
